Missionaries

9 Dec 2011 In: Here and There

Christians want to know what is happening in the "mission field" which normally refers to lands beyond America. I recently read in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) magazine that Israel refused to renew the visas of an ARP missionary couple, so it is good to know that another couple, Steven and Shari Khoury, do share the Gospel in Jerusalem through the Calvary Jerusalem Church. Pastor Steven was born an Arab in Israel. You can learn more about his ministry at http://www.holylandmissions.org.

At the VOM conference, Pastor Khoury reported that thousands of Christians from Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries are leaving because of persecution, violence and economic hardship. "Jerusalem is a land of conflict and strife, security fences and checkpoints." About 45,000 Christians lived in Jerusalem in 1940, but now there are fewer than 10,000.

Another missionary who spoke at the VOM conference is Russell Stendal whose field is Latin America. Russ was held by guerilla fighters in Colombia for 142 days, but was released. His book, Rescue the Captors, is reviving! You can learn more about his outreach at http://spiritofmartyrdom.com.

Sufferology

Richard Wurmbrand, founder of Voice of the Martyrs, once speculated it might be well to have university level courses in what the Bible says about Christian suffering. He jokingly called it "Sufferology Studies."

The current VOM staff decided to give wings to this concept, and now you can enroll in Persecution Studies, at http://www.vomclassroom.com.

The purpose of the online courses is to help students increase their understanding of Christian truth which will help them stand against heresy, become better witnesses, and draw nearer to Christ.

Here is a little about Pastor Wurmbrand from the http://torturedforchrist.com website:

We have written about his courage as he stood alone among more than 1,000 leaders to denounce the control of Romanian communism. The communists had closed Sunday schools and oppressed the church. Pastor Wurmbrand resisted the communists’ control of the church and went underground. He held services for youth attending his church in front of the lion’s den at the Bucharest Zoo to prepare them for battle with the world. Pastor Wurmbrand led his little Lutheran congregation, composed of many Jewish converts, to the Bucharest train station to toss Russian Gospels into the windows of passing trains filled with invading Russian soldiers. The soldiers kept the Gospels. For many such acts of aggressive love, he and his wife both went to prison.

Recently in Romania a poll was taken to ask the population who they felt were Romania's top ten most influential citizens. Pastor Wurmbrand was on the list. (I cannot cite the source of this information, but learned it at the VOM conference— See related post.)

His books are wonderful and many are currently being used in outreach to South American village Indians and guerrilla troops (see next post) as well as all over the world. They are provided to missionaries by VOM.

My favorite book by Pastor Wurmbrand is: Mark and Satan which presents many convincing proofs that Karl Marx was a Satanist. As a youth, Wurmbrand had studied Marxism in Moscow.

Theme Scripture— Ruth 1:16, 17: “Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”

Ruth’s solemn vow to break all ties with her past and to commit her heart to Naomi, the person of her deepest affection, are a whole expression of true love. That is why they are used at times in marriage ceremonies. Often, wedding guests don't realize that these Bible verses were spoken by a daughter-in-law to her departed husband's mother, who also was a widow.

Ruth’s words promised the greatest possible loyalty: She would follow Naomi, stay with her, adopt her kinsmen as her own, worship and love the God of Israel as her own, die in Naomi's land, and be buried there.

Then, after saying this and perhaps realizing that she might fail in her vow, she prayed that the LORD would punish her if ever it was broken.

Christian sisters, let us strive to love each other and God with this same intensity, and pray that the LORD will uphold our good intentions.
